Yogic Positions: Simhasana - The Lion Pose Simhasana - The Lion Pose
This asana is very different from other asanas
as it designed to focus on your face. With Simhasana, your eyes, jaw, mouth, throat and tongue all play
a role. We pay lot of attention to the other parts of our body, we also need to take care of
our face. Some uses of this positions: it is useful for sore throat problems. Relief for
tightness of the jaw, teeth grinding and clenched jaws is another benefit. This may also help
those with bad breath or those who stutter.This asana involves the stretching of the tongue, sticking it out of your open mouth while mimicing a roaring lion. With your jaw lowered and your eyes focused on the tip of your nose, this is a very good asana for tightening the skin of your face. It is considered to be an anti-ageing yogic asana. To practise this asana: 1. Kneel on the floor and cross the front of the right ankle over the back of the left. The feet will point out to the sides. Sit back so the perineum snuggles down onto the on the top (right) heel. 2. Press your palms firmly against your knees. Fan the palms and splay your fingers like the sharpened claws of a lion. 3. Take a deep inhalation through the nose. Then simultaneously open your mouth wide and stretch your tongue out, curling its tip down toward the chin, open your eyes wide, contract the muscles on the front of your throat, and exhale the breath slowly out through your mouth with a distinct "ha" sound. The breath should pass over the back of the throat. After 3 "roars" switch the position of your feet and repeat the posture. The pose has many uses. The muscles and tissues of your face will begin to restore their lost charm making your face more radiant than ever. The stretching and pulling stimulates the nerves to give you a refreshed look. The gaze used in the asana helps your eyes keep their shiny brightness. Tension is also removed from the eyes, face and chest. The stretching of of your fingers, strengthens and relaxes your hands. Finally, many of the diseases related to face, tongue, vocal cords back and anus can be treated by this asana. Simasana adds confidence to your posture and your character. Your voice can also improve by performing this asana. WARNING: Those with knees problems should use caution in doing his pose.
